Activity Poem: An Elephant Goes

Page history last edited by Meredith Ann Pierce 17 years ago

"An Elephant Goes Like This and That"

This is a great activity poem for Toddler or Preschool / Kindergarten storytimes, where it it performed standing.  Feel free to change the elephant to a hippo, dinosaur, or other big animal.

An elephant goes like this and that.

He's awfully big and terribly fat.

He has no fingers; he has no toes.

But--oh, my goodness--what a nose!

(stand rocking stiff-legged from foot to foot)

(hunch shoulders stiff-armed; big circle with arms)

(wiggle fingers; lift foot and wiggle toes)

(touch nose, raise arm, "trumpet" like an elephant)

If you need to return to a seated position at the end, say, "Boom!" immediately after trumpeting, then sit down abruptly.

"An Elephant Goes Like This and That" also works for Baby storytimes with modified motions.

An elephant goes like this and that.

He's awfully big and terribly fat.

He has no fingers; he has no toes.

But--oh, my goodness--what a nose!

(gently rock baby from side to side on lap)

(form baby's arms into a big circle)

(wiggle baby's fingers; wiggle baby's toes)

(touch baby's nose; raise baby's arm; trumpet softly)
