"A Caterpillar Crawled"
Preschool / Kindergarten audiences love to hear about caterpillars metamorphosing into butterflies.
This fingerplay works well in conjunction with the Eric Carle book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
A caterpillar crawled to the top of the tree.
"I think I'll take a nap," said he.
So under a leaf he began to creep
To spin his cocoon; then he fell asleep.
All winter long, he slept in his bed,
Till spring came. "Wake up, sleepyhead!"
A butterfly now on that fine spring day,
He opened his wings and flew away.

(creep fingers up one arm)
(creep fingers under other hand)
(bend down to speak to "cocoon")
(spread fingers, hook thumbs)
(flap hands as wings; fly away)
